Some people get no symptoms with a UTI, but most will have at least some of the following:
- Frequent urge to urinate.
- Painful or burning urination.
- Passing only a small amount of urine.
- Milky or cloudy urine.
- Foul smelling urine.
- Blood in the urine (hematuria).
- Blood may be visible, making the urine dark or reddish.
- Blood may be microscopic and found only by when urine is examined in a laboratory urine test (urinalysis).
- General discomfort or “sick” feeling, such as being tired and/or shaky.
- Pain in the back or side below the ribs.
- Some women feel an uncomfortable pressure above the pubic bone.
- Some men feel a fullness in the rectum.
- Pus in the urine or penile discharge in men may indicate urethritis.
- Fever, chills, nausea or vomiting may indicate pyelonephritis (kidney infection).
